Cutting Speed: Approx. 4” per second

Maximum Cut Size: Shape Dependent 11 ½” x 17 ½” ; up to 2’ x 3’ when tiling
Technical Specifications: USB Compatible

FAQs

What is the difference in cost between mechanical die cuts and Cutout Maker electronic dies?

Mechanical dies for traditional die cutters range in price from approximately $40 – $105. Cutout Maker electronic dies are $0.80 per shape when you invest in the Premium Content Access CD (No Expiration).

REMEMBER: Unlike other school die-cutting machines, the Cutout Maker features electronic dies that are scalable! Most electronic dies can range in size from 1” to 18”.

How do I purchase additional die-cut shapes, fonts and collections?

You can order additional content from your authorized VariQuest sales specialist or call 1-800-328-0585. The content options include: No Expiration or 1-Year Access to the Premium Content Access CD or Learning Modules.
You can invest in a Premium Content Access CD (offered in No Expiration or 1-Year Access) that will give you access to over 3,800 shapes, 14 fonts and 172 collections.
Also, you are able to invest in Learning Modules that will give you access to 30-118 shapes, fonts and/or collections geared towards a specific content area and grade level range. You will own all Learning Module content.
After you receive the CD (Premium Content Access CD or Learning Module), call the VariQuest Registration Center at 1-800-328-0585 to activate your new content.

How will all teachers, volunteers, and administrators in my school know what die-cut shapes, fonts and collections we own?

Fonts that your school owns will appear when you choose the Letters, Numbers & Symbols button in the Design Center Software. The collections will appear when you choose the Collections button. This is a welcome alternative to digging through racks of mechanical dies – a required step when using other school die-cut machines.

All shapes appear when you choose the Shapes button in the Design Center Software. The shapes that your school has purchased and activated will have an orange ‘Activated’ label with a white background. Shapes that your school does not yet own will be grayed out with a “Not Activated” label.

Can my Cutout Maker shapes, fonts and collections also be printed on posters and awards?

Fonts, which are purchased and activated for the Cutout Maker, may be printed on the Poster Maker and Awards Maker. However, the shapes and collections are developed differently than the print-only graphics and cannot be printed on posters and awards.

Is the cut speed for laminated construction paper the same as unlaminated construction paper?

No. The cut speed depends on the content (shape, font or collection) being cut. Blade depth and blade pressure vary, therefore cutting speeds range from approximately 1” to 6” per second. The average cut speed is 4” per second.

How often do I need to change the Cutout Maker blade?

As a general guideline and preventative maintenance tip, we suggest that you change your blade once a month. You may need to change it more often depending on material type and volume of cutting.

How often do I need to change the Cutout Maker cutting mat?

As a general guideline and preventative maintenance tip, we suggest that you change your cutting mat once a year depending on usage. You can extend the life of your mat by rotating it 180° periodically.

What does “Minimum Cut Size” mean? Is this the same for all shapes?

Each shape, font and collection has a “Minimum Cut Size,” which can be different depending on the detail of the content (shape, font or collection) being cut.
The purpose of the “Minimum Cut Size” message is to inform you that the cut quality may not be acceptable at the selected size. You may choose to still cut the shape or choose to make the shape larger for optimal cut quality.

Are there any safety issues for students operating the Cutout Maker?

The Cutout Maker is designed to be safe enough for students to operate! The machine is UL and CE certified and meets the federal guidelines for safety. However, we do recommend that an adult change the blade, as it is very sharp.

How do I change the blade in the Cutout Maker?

Simply…
Turn power OFF.
Rotate blade holder 90° toward front of unit.
Press blade release button.
Remove blade with blade removal tool.
Insert new blade.
Secure blade by turning power ON.
Rotate blade holder 90° back to operating position.

Does the LCD on the Cutout Maker tell me which color of material to load when cutting collections?

Yes! The LCD on the Cutout Maker will instruct you to load each color of material when needed. For example, “Load yellow construction paper.”

Can I use scrap pieces of paper to cut out shapes, fonts and collections?

Yes! You can create cutouts from scrap paper as small as 4” x 6”.

How do I apply a vinyl sign or decal?

FAQs

Is the Design Center all inclusive?

Yes, it contains a hard drive, monitor, CD-RW/DVD-ROM and six USB ports. Additionally, the Design Center is pre-loaded with the latest version of VariQuest Software.

Is there a significant difference between using the Design Center and running VariQuest Software on a regular PC?

Yes, the touch screen is easy to use, doesn’t take up a lot of valuable space and will not tie-up IT resources. Also, the Design Center comes pre-loaded with the necessary product drivers and software application to run the VariQuest tools, so it’s ready to use right out of the box. Any user can approach the touch screen without having to log on to a computer and begin using the software.

Can I load Microsoft Office software, Adobe Suite, or other applications on the Design Center 2300?

You can load Microsoft Office software and other programs on the Design Center; however, additional applications may slow down the performance of the VariQuest application. For optimal performance, we recommend you do not load other software programs onto the Design Center unless they are specifically designed to work with the VariQuest Software. At this time, the only program that we recommend is Inspiration® version 9.0a. VariQuest Software and its accompanying templates have been developed to work specifically with VariQuest product.
If you want to print to the Perfecta from another computer, you need to install the Perfecta 2400 print driver. The print driver is located on the VariQuest Design Center Software 3.0 installation DVD. Select the Device-Only Install option and follow the prompts.

Do I need to shut down my Design Center every night?

No, you may leave the Design Center on continuously during regular usage. It is recommended to power down the system when not using it for an extended period of time.

Do we recommend using a surge protector?

Yes, as with any valuable electronic components, this is strongly recommended for all VariQuest products.

What temperature ranges can this product withstand?

Operating temperature range: 50° to 95°F.
Operating humidity range: 10 to 90%RH.

What if I own an early version of the 3000 Series PosterPrinter that only has a parallel port and not USB, can I still connect this to the Design Center? Are special drivers needed since it’s not USB?

No, the DC2300 does not have a parallel port. You would need to load the software on an available PC with a parallel port and request a VariQuest Design Center 3.0 installation DVD.

How do I load digital photos and images into the Design Center?

Photos and images can be saved to a USB flash drive or burned onto a CD/DVD and installed on the Design Center. The files can be accessed by selecting a template and importing the photo or image located on the USB flash drive or CD right into that template. Please see the Design Center Software User’s Guide for supported file types.

How do I import photos from a CD (such as student photos) to the Design Center?

Load the CD into the CD-RW drive on the side of the Design Center. When the files launch, save to a folder created on the desktop (this will be the easiest place to locate later). The files can be accessed by selecting a template and importing the photo into that template.

How do you import my own graphics such as our school mascot? Does it matter if the graphics are full color or black and white?

Please follow the same procedure as outlined in the previous questions. When using the Poster Maker 3600 or the Awards Maker, the mascot file should be black and white or grayscale for optimum quality. You can import both color and black and white graphics to the Perfecta templates.

What happens when I purchase additional VariQuest products after I have initially set-up my Design Center?

It is recommended that you perform a software upgrade each time you add additional components. This will ensure the latest database of content and software updates.

Can I print 8 ½” x 11” originals to a desktop printer from the Design Center? Is it plug and play or do I need to load special drivers?

You will need to follow the Windows “Add New Printer” wizard when installing a desktop or laser printer. Once installed, it will appear in the “Output Devices” section located in the Workroom Assistant tab. Note – The Perfecta 2400 printer utilizes the 8 ½” x 11 tray located on the back of the printer.

Is VariQuest Software v3.0 compatible with Windows operating systems?

Yes, VariQuest Software v3.0 is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 7 operating systems.

Can we load VariQuest Software v3.0 on each teacher’s computer?

Yes, the software license allows you to install VariQuest Software on computers located at your school site. Advantages include being able to print 8 ½” x 11” documents to use with the scan-to-print feature of the Poster Maker, save edited Poster Maker templates on a USB flash drive to print at the Poster Maker, and the ability to view all of the available content. At this time, not all VariQuest devices are able to print or cut over the network. In order to view Perfecta module the Perfecta will have to be physically connected to the PC at least once during install (it does not need to stay connected).

What type of file works best for importing a graphic or illustration into the DC 2300?

Graphic files that use any of these supported formats will be displayed:
Bitmap (*.bmp)
Tiff (*.tif)
JPEG (*.jpg)
Portable Network Graphic (*.png)
Windows Metafile (*.wmf)

FAQs

What advantages does the Perfecta have over other competitive wide format inkjet printers offered to the education market?

The VariQuest Perfecta is an all-inclusive system (printer, touch workstation and software) – all designed to work together and developed specifically for schools in mind. While we certainly understand there are other competitive wide-format printers on the market, we feel our solution is better suited for most school applications due to the following:

- Compact footprint and light weight compared to all other models
- Fully integrated and easy to use software application with hundreds of curriculum enhancing poster/banner templates
- Easy to use and operate (4′ touch panel guides the user through media and ink loading)
- Lower cost of maintenance due to an affordable (and user replaceable) print head which retails at just $249.95
- Less ink used during print head cleaning and re-alignment process due to no tubing mechanism (which needs to be filled with ink at all times)

How much ink is included with the starter ink cartridges that are bundled with the Perfecta 2400? How much ink is included in a full cartridge?

Starter ink (per cartridge) – Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow = 12ml; Black = 38ml
Full ink (per cartridge) – Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow = 29ml, Black = 80ml

How many posters can I print from the starter set and full set of inks? What is the cost per poster?

Ink usage varies based on many variables – type and amount of content on poster, output size, paper type, print speed, and printer maintenance. That said, Varitronics conducted tests to estimate the average cost per poster using Perfecta Heavyweight Coated paper. Please contact your authorized VariQuest representative for additional information.

Can you use the Perfecta to print something in grayscale? Does the printer use any of the colored ink (Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow), or does it use only the black ink cartridge?

Yes, the printer could potentially use CMY inks to complete the greyscale printing. With inkjet technology, there are several circumstances when color ink may be used – primarily to improve print quality, and improve printer reliability – even if the document appears to be only black text and graphics. Some images that look black may contain a combination of black and color inks. For black and white images and photos, a blend of colors called ‘composite black’ may be used to achieve better image quality and smoother gray tones. The nozzles also must be primed for the printer to operate – a tiny amount of CMY inks are used in this process. That said, you can reduce the color inks used by modifying the driver settings.

Can the Perfecta posters be hot or cold laminated?

Perfecta Bond – Hot and Cold
Perfecta Heavyweight Coated – Hot and Cold
Perfecta Semi-Gloss Photo Paper – Hot and Cold
Perfecta Gloss Photo Paper – Hot and Cold
Perfecta Matte Polypropylene – Cold lamination only
(See ink drying time under Operating Conditions later in this section.)

What are the operating conditions and storage temperatures of the Perfecta printer and supplies?

Perfecta™ 2400 Printer
Operating temperature: 41 to 104F
Storage temperature: -13 to 131F
Operating humidity: 20 to 80% RH
Perfecta™ Inks
Operating temperature: 41 to 95°F
Storage temperature: -40 to 140°F
Operating humidity: 10 to 90% RH
Perfecta™ Media (will vary slightly depending on paper type)
Operating temperature: 59 to 86°F
Storage temperature: 30 to 70% RH
Drying time:
Bond/Coated = instant dry
Photo Satin/Gloss = 5 minutes
Matte Polypropylene = 11 minutes

Is there a shelf life on Perfecta Ink and Media?

Varitronics’ products include a one year warranty. Varitronics will monitor shelf life and inventory levels to ensure a quality product is delivered to the customer.

Is the Perfecta Matte Polypropylene Paper designed for outside use? Will the ink bleed/run when it gets wet (rain, sprinklers, mist, etc.)?

The Perfecta Matte Polypropylene Paper cannot be hot laminated. The ink will bleed if it gets wet. Cold lamination will help protect from moisture – as well as fading. We recommend using the VariQuest Cold Laminator 2510 when laminating heat-sensitive materials.

Can I laminate Perfecta posters with the 24″ ProFinish® Cold laminating System?

Varitronics tested and, while it is possible to feed the 24″media through the 24″ ProFinish Cold Laminator, there is an extremely high chance of the poster wrinkling. For optimum results, it is recommended to upgrade to the VariQuest Cold Laminator 2510.

Does the Perfecta print edge-to-edge?

Margins for the Perfecta are: (top x bottom x left x right)
Roll: 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 in
Sheet: 0.2 x 0.67 x 0.2 x 0.2 in

Will the Perfecta print certificates?

8.5″ x 11″ certificates can be printed using the built-in sheet fed tray.

What size posters does the Perfecta print? I understand it is 24″ wide but can it be adjusted to print longer in length like banners? How versatile is it in adjusting the end product size of posters.

The VariQuest poster sizes are pre-set in the VariQuest software. Most posters will be output at 24″ x 33″. Banners will vary in length depending on the template used. Currently there is no way to scale the output to a different size from the pre-selected size.

Is the Perfecta 2400 Mac-compatible?

Yes, the Perfecta is Mac OS compatible however, the VariQuest software is not. The Perfecta 2400 printer can be used with any Mac-compatible graphic design software program, just not VariQuest software. Please contact your authorized VariQuest dealer or Varitronics Technical Support to obtain Mac-compatible drivers for your Perfecta.

What is the estimated life expectancy of the Perfecta?

Normal printer use means 800,000 m Carriage traveled distance (which corresponds approximately to more than 15,000 A1 prints on average). Under normal conditions, it will be approximately more than 5 years before the printer needs maintenance. If the printer is used more than the normal usage conditions, then it will need maintenance service more frequently.

What type of file works best for importing a graphic or illustration into the DC 2300?

Graphic files that use any of these supported formats will be displayed:
- Bitmap (*.bmp)
- TIFF (*.tif)
- JPEG (*.jpg)
- Portable Network Graphic (*.png)
- Windows Metafile (*.wmf)

FAQs

Can the Poster Maker be networked?

At this time, the Poster Maker and all VariQuest tools cannot be networked.

How often does the Poster Maker paper cutter need to be replaced?

The automatic cutter should not require replacement for the life of the Poster Maker.

If there is a problem with the cutter, can I manually cut the paper?

Yes, there is a button on the LCD panel that will activate the cutter. In the event of a cutter error, you can turn the Poster Maker off and manually slide the cutter.

How much paper needs to be pulled out when using the auto-cut function?

The manufacturers’ recommendation is to pull out 8” of paper to remove any slack. You should make sure that at least 2” of paper is past the cutter.

How can I tell what the length of a finished banner will be? Can I pre-select a size to fit an area of my school?

The template length is automatically calculated by the width of the paper installed and the set-up of the original template. The total length of the banner or poster will appear on the “Print Preview” screen before printing. At this time, there is no option that allows you to change the length of a banner or poster template. However, there are templates that are designed to print at a specific length. Please refer to the Content Update II Insert or your Design Center Software v1.2 to view those templates.

Can I still print banners on stand-alone mode?

Yes, there is an “Output Sizes” function located within the Menu selections on the LCD panel of the Poster Maker. Please refer to the Poster Maker User’s Guide for assistance.

How do I print from a PDF or other poster creator applications?

Please refer to the Design Center User’s Guide for instructions on printing a PDF.

What menu function is used to enlarge a specific area of a document?

The menu function is called “Enlarge Area” and is located by selecting the Menu button on the LCD panel of the Poster Maker.

When using the “Enlarge Area” function, should I use a special color of ink when creating the command sheet? Do the lines of the box need to be connected?

While you do not need a special ink, it is very important that the lines are solid and connected.

Can I produce multiple copies of a poster when enlarging an area?

No. The “Multiple Copies” function is not available when using the “Enlarge Area” function.

How do I adjust the contrast?

On the LCD panel of the Poster Maker, press the Menu button twice, then press the Select button. Using the Select button, you can choose to increase or decrease the level of contrast. Press Menu>Clear to accept and get back to the “Standby” screen.

The Poster Maker will retain this new setting until manually adjusted back to normal setting or until the power is recycled. In the event the power is recycled, the setting will return to the factory default.

How do I shut off the auto cut function?

On the LCD panel of the Poster Maker, press the Menu button four times to reach the Auto Cut setting. Using the Select key, toggle between On and Off. Press Menu>Clear to accept and return to the “Standby” screen.

The Poster Maker will retain this setting until manually changed back; even if the power is recycled (this is different from the Contrast and Output Size settings).

How do I select the reverse mode when using the Design Center or when making a poster in stand-alone mode?

When using the Design Center, select the option “Reverse Print” that appears in the upper right section of the Print Preview Screen.

When making a poster in stand-alone mode, press the Mode button on the panel of the Poster Maker until you see “Reverse” displayed in the LCD panel.

Are my adjustments to the control panel saved when I shut the Poster Maker off or do the settings revert to factory-installed settings?

The Contrast and Output Size settings return back to the factory defaults when the power is recycled. All other settings (Auto Cut, Advanced Setup, and Set Unit Lengths) retain changed settings until manually set back to defaults.

Does my Poster Maker 3600 require disposable end caps?

No, the end caps for the Poster Maker paper rolls are secured on each roll. The right-side end cap houses a computer chip, which provides paper supply information (type, width and color) to the Poster Maker and Design Center. The chip also communicates the approximate number of feet remaining on the roll of installed paper.

FAQs

Are supplies still available for PosterPrinter models?

Yes, we now sell two types of poster paper. PosterPrinter owners will continue to purchase PosterPrinter paper without end caps.

Is there a price difference between Poster Maker and PosterPrinter paper?

There is no price difference between the two types of poster paper.
